The Peninsula Channel Commanders opened its new Richardson Field for flying Feb. 1, but what with weather, remodeling and other distractions, I hadn’t had a chance to visit since a series of work parties in January.

Wednesday, Bruce Crawford, Larry Smith, Matt Abrams and I met at the new field for some serious flying.

The weather was perfect: cool but so sunny that I was quickly peeling off layers of clothes, shrinking from Michelin Man to more human proportions. This is a lovely flying site, just off of Highway 1 about 4 miles south of Highway 92.

I’ve written before about the PCC’s former field, the loss of that field, the beginnings of Richardson Field and, of course, I started Ups & Downs with an account of a visit to the original field.

In addition to Matt, Bruce, Larry and me, three PCC members were at the field when I arrived: Mickey Darata, Bob Mariani and Paul Lum. Mickey and Paul both flew gas planes while Paul worked on breaking in a new engine. Meanwhile, their friend Hans Beck and his dog Kiera watched the action from a sunny bench.

IN a year or so, Hunter will be Matt’s spotter. IN a year or so, Hunter will be Matt’s spotter.
