Doing Battle. Boomer Butch, right foreground, flanked by Baylands flyers.

Seven Baylands flyers traveled to Dublin, CA, Saturday morning to mix it up with four local Boomer pilots.

The Boomer is the creation of Boomer Butch, who cut down a Wild Wing, added a nose and tail with elevator and produced a highly acrobatic combat vehicle.

Led by Dave North’s analysis, we’ve simplified Butch’s design by eliminating the tail and elevator and added very efficient motors swinging 5-inch props.

Kevin Chin coordinated the event. Other participating local pilots were Butch, Paul Viscovich and Darren Sorce.

Baylands flyers were Dave North, Akkana Peck, Bruce Crawford, Larry Smith, Frank Ducker, Mike Nadler and me. Chris Crawford came to watch and took most of the pictures you see here.

Happy “Talk Like a Pirate Day”!

Friday, September 19th, 2008

I’m looking forward to visiting Baylands today and hearing everyone celebrate this special holiday, popularized by Dave Barry.

As for me, I can manage an “Arrr” or two, but that’s the extent of my pirate vocabulary.

For next year, I’ll try to find a stuffed parrot to mount on the shoulder of my flying vest.

Here’s my one attempt at writing like a pirate: Killer Yuke: A Halloween Story.

Anti Lust Spray

Banish your insatiable hungers with this convenient chemical cure!

Banish your insatiable hungers with this convenient chemical cure!

My friend Brian Chan pointed me to this spray-on cure for Lift Bucket Lust and, apparently, all RC-related cravings.

I haven’t seen it in any local stores, perhaps because it wouldn’t be good for a business that so depends on lust and unchecked impulses.

Thanks, Brian!

The Tree Tamer

No treed plane will escape its grasp!

No treed plane will escape its grasp!

Lust stirred in our hearts when the great white bucket lift pulled up to the base of the Killer Yuke.

Regular readers will readily remember accounts of encounters between wayward aircraft and this cruel tree. The tree always wins, of course.

Its success in preying on airplanes led us to develop the Fetchomatic 3000. Unfortunately, the Fetchomatic trailed webs of monofilament. After a Red-Tailed Hawk got snagged in monofilament, we banished its use. (Fortunately, the Red-Tailed Hawk was rescued and returned to Baylands.)

Lots of Gliders

Our red-tailed hawk keeps track of us from his perch in the Giant Yuke.

Our red-tailed hawk keeps track of us from his perch in the Giant Yuke.

Gliders dominated Monday at Baylands.

Sure, there were scads of Wild Wings, a sprinkling of EDF jets, some helicopters and other aircraft, but I was struck by the prevalence of big motorized gliders.

Peter Rasmussen brought two of his vintage built-up gliders, complementing a big old red V-tail glider which Andrew Eichenbaum was flying.

It’s been around awhile: Andrew bought it from Bob McGowan, who was not the original owner. Bob added the V-tail.
