The Peninsula Channel Commanders opened its new Richardson Field for flying Feb. 1, but what with weather, remodeling and other distractions, I hadn’t had a chance to visit since a series of work parties in January.

Wednesday, Bruce Crawford, Larry Smith, Matt Abrams and I met at the new field for some serious flying.

The weather was perfect: cool but so sunny that I was quickly peeling off layers of clothes, shrinking from Michelin Man to more human proportions. This is a lovely flying site, just off of Highway 1 about 4 miles south of Highway 92.

The Peninsula Channel Commanders flying group has quickly rebounded from the loss of its Half Moon Bay flying field at the end of October.

George Golda, a member of the club, asked John Giusti, a Half Moon Bay farmer, if he had any land that he might be willing to lease to the group.

John said yes.

The club is still working out the deal, but the prognosis is sufficiently favorable that the club invited members to look at the field on Sunday.

It’s a good-looking flying site, bigger and far less hazardous than our last Half Moon Bay site. No cliffs, no ocean, no ravines.

The last day of September marked the end of flying at the Half Moon Bay airfield used by the Peninsula Channel Commanders since the year 2000.

A local farmer had rented his land to the club for the airfield.

But the farmer recently sold his land, including the patch used by the PCC.

Two months ago the new owner notified the group that the lease was now month-to-month. More recently the new owner decided that the lease would end on the last day of October, and that flying was to end immediately.

Lady Pilot

[This post is obsolete. The new gallery software was too temperamental and I’ve taken it offline and restored the old, reliable, gallery.]

With the help of a robotic script and all too much fiddling, I’ve copied all 750 or so the Ups & Downs photos into the new Photos section.

Why bother with this upgrade?

Mainly because I now have more publishing flexibility, including the ability to publish albums within albums. So, for instance, I moved the Return of Pickleweed Red and Fast Boats albums into the 2007 Photos: December album.

The Barn

Early this year, I volunteered to manage the website for the Peninsula Channel Commanders R/C group.

The group’s site, launched in 2001, was functional but needed a new coat of pixels.

I redesigned the site. Actually, I redesigned the site a number of times, refining the look and feel with each iteration as I learned more about what I was doing.

Months Later… That went quite well, though it took me lots of hours. In February when I told her what I’d signed up for, Suzette said, “See you in May.” She’s an excellent prophet.
